In the Star Trek universe, Betazoids are a telepathic humanoid species, originating from the planet Betazed. Betazoids are identical to humans in appearance in all aspects except for the black eyes. Like humans, they are capable of cross breeding with other humanoid races including humans, and Klingons.

Telepathy

Most Betazoids develop telepathy during adolescence. However, a select few develop abilities as early as birth which can prove devastating for their mental development. Skill with telepathic communication and empathy varies according to individual and their devotion to training their skill. In the case of hybrids such as Deanna Troi, telepathy is more limited than that of full Betazoids. Such hybrids may only be able to communicate with other telepaths or their abilities may be limited to empathy.

Some species are immune to Betazoid telepathy, among them Ferengi, Breen, Ullians and Dopterians.

Culture

Betazoids are polytheistic, and sometimes swear "By the Four Dieties". Due to their telepathic nature, they tend to embrace honesty, and are "open" in ways that are sometimes difficult for humans to understand. They don't believe in telling a "fib" to spare one's feelings. They honor physical intimacy, and normally attend wedding ceremonies in the nude.
