Bernard Herrmann (b. June 29, 1911 New York City, New York – December 24, 1975) is an Academy Award-winning American composer who has worked on such notable films as Citizen Kane, The Devil and Daniel Webster, North by Northwest, Mysterious Island, Psycho and Fahrenheit 451.
Herrmann won a composition prize at 13 and founded his own orchestra by twenty. He started out in radio scoring Orson Welles' radio show in the 1930s. He provided the music for the infamous The War of the Worlds broadcast. Welle's chose Herrmann to score his film debut Citizen Kane and ater, The Magnificent Ambersons. Hermman earned his first Oscar nomination for Citizen Kane and earned four more nominations later for The Devil and Daniel Webster, which he won, Anna and the King of Siam and Taxi Driver and Obsession .
Some of Herrmann's most memorable work was with Alfred Hitchock. He wrote nine scores for Hitchcock including the horror classic Psycho. When Hitchcock and the studio reject his score for Torn Curtain, their working relationship came to an end. Other notable scores include The Day the Earth Stood Still, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Journey to the Center of the Earth , Cape Fear, The Birds, Jason and the Argonauts and several episodes of The Alfred Hitchock Hour, The Twilight Zone, The Virginians, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
In addition to his work in film and radio, Hermann also wrote and opera, Wuthering Heights and a cantata, Moby Dick.
