Captain Benjamin Sisko, played by Avery Brooks on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is the Captain of the Deep Space Nine space station in the Bajoran sector of the Alpha Quadrant.
His son is Jake Sisko.
Benjamin and Jake were still adjusting to the death of his wife and Jake's mother, Jennifer Sisko three years previously, when Commander Sisko was assignned to Deep Space Nine, a space station orbiting the planet Bajor. The station had been built by the Cardassian government during the decades long occupation of Bajor, and was now going to used to benefit the newly freed Bajoran people. The Bajoran provisional government asked for the Federation's help in providing a military presence to provide security for Bajor. It was hoped that Bajor would one day become a member of the Federation. So the station would be run by Starfleet officers, with Commander Sisko in command. Ben hoped the new posting would help himself and his son move on with their lives.
At first, Sisko was unhappy with the posting, which seemed to be more diplomatic than miltary, having to deal with a number of problems, including Bajoran Major Kira Nerys, who seemed to feel that by asking for Starfleet's help, the Bajorans were trading one occupying army for another. It was also difficult dealing with the ancient Bajoran religion, which worshipped the mystical "Prophets", and with which Sisko, a secularist, was uncomfortable. When an encounter with one of the Bajorans mystic relics, one of the "Orb of the Prophets", declared Sisko the prophesized "Emmisary of the Prophets", Sisko grew even more uncomfortable.
The discovery of a stable wormhole that linked the Alpha Quadrant with the far off Gamma Quadrant, creating a whole new frontier for commerce and exploration, his "posting in the boon docks" would become of immense importance to the Federation and the entire Alpha Quadrant. The Bajorans felt the wormhole (the first stable one ever found) was actually the prophesized "Celestial Temple" that was always destined to appear around the time of the coming of the "Emmisary". With a gateway to a whole differen tquadrant of the universe, the Bajorans were now set up to become big players in this section of the galaxy. That is, if they could survive encounters with the Gamma Quadrant's races, particularly the order and control driven Dominion, which saw the Alpha Quadrant as a kind of invader. Still, with a posting that was now of great importance (due to the Wormhole discovery), Starfleet might have replaced Sisko with a more experienced commanding officer. Fortunately, the Bajoran government insisted they keep the "Emmissary of the Prophets" in place. And what about the alien contact they had had in the wormhole? Were those "wormhole aliens" or, as the Bajoran's felt, the Prophets themselves?
As time went on, Sisko would develop a bond with Bajor and its people, and would come to understand that he was linked from birth to this ancient religion. Bringing about the salvation of the Bajorans was not only his duty as a Starfleet officer, but his destiny as well.
By the end of the series, Commander Sisko would be promoted to full Captain.
