Bela Lugosi (Belá Ferenc Dezso Blascó) (October 20, 1882 – August 16, 1956) Hungarian actor who traveled to America in the 1920s, where he appeared on the stage and in small movie roles. He portrayed the Count in the 1927 Broadway adaptation of Dracula, and recreated the role in Universal’s 1931 movie. After turning down the part of the Frankenstein Monster the following year, he quickly lost his crown as the King of Horror to rival Boris Karloff.
Despite other such memorable roles as zombie master "Murder" Legendre in White Zombie (1932), and the broken-necked Ygor in Son of Frankenstein (1939) and Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), his career floundered amongst poverty-row horrors. Although he successfully overcame drug dependency, he ended his days in such humiliations as Glen or Glenda (1953) and Bride of the Monster (1954).
Martin Landau won an Academy Award for playing him in Ed Wood (1995).
