Being John Malkovich is a quirky film from Spike Jonze. Though not a popular release, the film won praise from critics and garnered three Academy Award nominations for Jonze for his directing, Catherine Keener for her supporting role and Charlie Kaufman for his creative writing.
As the title implies, the film does feature actor John Malkovich playing himself. John Cusack portrays Craig Schwartz, a puppeteer working at a Manhattan office as a filing clerk. Craig discovers that a doorway inside the odd office is a portal into John Malkovich. On entering the doorway, a person is transported into Malkovich's body where they hear, feel, and experience all the actor does for fifteen minutes. Once the short experience is over you are dumped in a ditch alongside the New Jersey Turnpike. Craig's coworker Maxine (Catherine Keener) decides to take advantage of his discovery and begins to sell trips for $200.
