Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 Disney animated musical film based on the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont in which a beautiful young lady is held captive in a castle by a monster. The film won two Oscars for its score, produced by Alan Menken and best original song with lyrics from Howard Ashman. It was also nominated for Best Picture, the first animated film to receive that honor.

Beauty and the Beast combined traditional animation and computer generated images to animate a cast of singing characters and inanimate objects. The film was adapted for a Broadway musical which began its run in 1994 and came to an end in 2007.
