Beau Bridges, born Lloyd Vernet Bridges III, is a well known actor, director, and producer. He was born December 9, 1941, in Hollywood, California, to actor Lloyd Bridges and his college sweetheart Dorothy Dean Bridges. He was nicknamed Beau after Ashley Wilke's son in Gone with the Wind, a book his parents had recently read. He has two siblings, a brother, Jeff Bridges, and sister, Cindy Bridges.

Career

Beau began acting as a child, mainly with small roles in films such as No Minor Vices, Force of Evil, and The Red Pony. He was not seriously interested in film and had a strong interest in basketball. He played on the UCLA basketball team and also at the University of Hawaii but soon realized his height of only 5'10" would be a hindrance as a professional player. He dropped out of university and returned to acting.

His return to acting began with a small role on his father's TV Series Sea Hunt. He also made his stage debut in the play Where's Daddy in 1966. He continued to act, guest starring on several TV series including My Three Sons, Rawhide, Gunsmoke and Mr. Novak. In the early 70s he had roles in several feature films including The Landlord in 1970, Child's Play and Hammersmith is Out in 1972. He also acted in several TV Movies including The Man Without a Country (1973), The Stranger Who Looks Like Me (1974), and the title role in Benjamin Franklin (1974).

He acted steadily throughout the 70s and 80s and in 1987 he tried his hand at directing in the feature films The Wild Pair, and Seven Hours to Judgment. He also directed the TV Movies The Kid from Nowhere in 1982, Don't Touch in 1985 and The Thanksgiving Promise in 1986.

The 1990s brought roles in several TV movies including Wildflower, Vaults of Horror I, The Man with Three Wives and Million Dollar Babies. He also guest starred on the TV series The Outer Limits with his son Dylan Bridges and his father, Lloyd. In the 21st century, he guest starred on The District, Will and Grace and Everwood.

In 2005, Beau joined the cast of Stargate SG-1 in the role of General Hank Landry. He also guest starred on several episodes of series' spin-off Stargate Atlantis. He continues to act in TV and film. He has recently completed the films The Good German, Spinning into Butter, Charlotte's Web, and Americanizing Shelley.

Beau Bridges has been nominated for and has received several awards for his work.

  • 1992 Golden Globe in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture for Without Warning:The James Brady Story
  • 1992 Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for Without Warning: The James Brady Story
  • 1993 Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom
  • 1994 Golden Globe in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom
  • 1997 Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for The Second Civil War

Personal Life

Beau married Julie Landifield in 1964 and the couple adopted a son, Casey. They also had a biological child, Jordan. The couple divorced in 1984. He remarried in April of 1984 to Wendy Treece Bridges and has three children with his second wife: Dylan, Emily and Ezekiel.

Beau enjoys music and plays the guitar. He collects Native American instruments. He also enjoys surfing and swimming. He is devoted to environmental causes and was president of the environmental group Ventura Coastkeeper.
