Battlestar Prometheus

From SCIFIPEDIA

Battlestar Prometheus SIM is a PBeM (play by email) simulation set in the reimagined series of Battlestar Galactica. Prometheus operates within the simming organization known as the United Confederation of Interstellar Planets.

Creation

Battlestar Prometheus officially launched on November 14, 2006, with its first plot entitled "Aftermath." Prometheus had a crew of seven members at the time of launch, and that number has since grown to twenty.

Premise

Prometheus is set in the reimagined series of Battlestar Galactica. The sim began on the day of the Cylon attack against the Twelve Colonies of Kobol aboard the Battlestar Solaria.

While docking at Picon Orbital Station, the Battlestar Solaria suddenly detected three unknown DRADIS contacts. Identification checks flagged these unknown vessels as Cylon basestars. Almost immediately after jumping into orbit of Picon, the Cylon basestars fire multiple nuclear missiles. Picon Orbital is destroyed in the opening attack, and the Solaria, having been docked at the station, was severely damaged.

With engines offline, the battlestar was unable to maintain its orbit and was rapidly pulled closer to the planet by Picon's gravitational well. In a matter of minutes the ship entered the colony's upper atmosphere, and subsequently crashed into the planet.

Not all was lost, however. Though not intended to enter a planet's atmosphere, the Solaria managed to survive the crash, albeit severely damaged and unsalvageable. Over two-thirds of the crew perished, but there were nearly two thousand survivors who made it through alive.

Commander Marcus Cyrus, the ship's Commanding Officer, was one of those who did not make it. With the CO dead, command of the battlestar and her surviving crew members fell to Colonel Erin Kei, the Executive Officer. Kei, knowing it is only a matter of time before Cylon ground forces show up at the crash site, quickly initiates a plan for the complete evacuation of the crew.

While this is underway, a scouting party is sent outside the ship to take stake of the current situation on Picon, and to locate suitable extraction zones for the crew to evacuate to. While scouting the area around the Solaria, the recon team detects gun shots somewhere in the distance and quickly move out to investigate the source. What they find is an old freighter company on the outskirts of Picon City. The gunshots originated from a fight between three individuals and a Cylon ground patrol.

The recon team from the Solaria assists in the destruction of the Cylon patrol, and learns that the three individuals were seeking a way off planet, and had made their way to the freighter company in hopes of obtaining one of the old freighters docked there. They have located the launch keys for the ships, and were hoping to take it into orbit to try and locate the Battlestar Prometheus, one of the original twelve battlestars now being used by the Colonial Fleet Academy for cadet training missions and live fire exercises.

Armed with this new information, and the launch keys for five large freighters, the recon party and their three guests return to the Solaria, where they brief Colonel Kei on the situation. Kei quickly formulates a plan to get the surviving crew off of Picon and aboard the Battlestar Prometheus.

The evacuation of the Solaria is ordered shortly after. While the evacuation is underway, a team of five pilots is dispatched to the freighter company to power up the ships and bring them back to the crash site of the Solaria where they are to bring aboard the evacuated crew members. Meanwhile, Colonel Kei and a small team board one of the Solaria's surviving raptors to make their way into orbit to locate the Prometheus.

The team is successful in finding the Prometheus, which survived the initial Cylon attack. The raptor performs a short FTL jump to the ship to avoid Cylon detection, and subsequently lands. Kei and her team make their way to CIC to power up the ship and bring it back to full operational status.

Meanwhile, the five freighters successfully make it back to the crash site of the Solaria, and the surviving crew members begin to board the vessels. Their time and luck has run out, though, and a Cylon ground assault commences before the crew is safely aboard the freighters. However, under the protection of the marines the crew members manage to get aboard the ships, and the pilots safely maneuver the craft into orbit with minimal loses.

The freighters are pursued by Cylon raiders once they are in orbit, but two accompanying raptors manage to confuse the fighters by launching drones. This maneuver allows enough time for the freighters to spin up their FLT drives and jump to the Prometheus.

With the crew now aboard their new battlestar, Colonel Kei and the CIC crew begin making preparations to jump away from Picon. However, the situation has become more complicated in orbit, with two Colonial ships—the Battlestar Helius and Destroyer Balmorale—engaged in an intense battle with two Cylon basestars. Unwilling to leave fellow Colonials behind, Colonel Kei orders the Prometheus to position itself between the Cylon basestars and the Balmorale.

While the Helius is engaged with the other basestar, the Prometheus instructs the CO of the Balmorale, now critically damaged from the engagement, to begin evacuating the ship.

As the crew of the Balmorale ferry themselves aboard the Prometheus, the Helius continues its desperate fight against the other basestar. Their situation looks grim, but the battlestar manages to destroye the basestar with the use of several of its nuclear warheads. However, the celebrations are cut short when two additional basestars jump into the engagement zone. Helius, determined to give the Prometheus enough time to safely evacuate the Balmorale, engages these new arrivals to no avail; the battlestar is destroyed in a blinding nuclear explosion.

Seeing the dire situation, the Prometheus quickly finishes bringing aboard the crew of the Balmorale before spinning up their FTL and jumping safely away from Picon.

So began the journey of the Battlestar Prometheus.

Current Status

Since its creation in November of 2006, Battlestar Prometheus has successfully completed three plots and has embarked upon its fourth, titled "Offensive Actions." The SIM is nearing the end of season one, which concludes with one of the most intriguing plots to date.

The SIM recently achieved a milestone with over 1,000 logs submitted by the crew.
