Summary
This issue begins with a “15 minutes ago” sequence that fills in the missing bits of information from the finale of issue 3. Facing a squad of Cylon Raiders, Adama and Starbuck prepare for the fight of their lives—but they soon discover that these Cylons are following protocols from more than fifty years ago and are therefore loyal to humans. Adama pulls rank as the last surviving officer of the fleet, and the Cylons acknowledge him as their leader.
Back to present time: Sharon and Baltar’s Number Six both sense the presence of these early-model Cylons, who are now escorting fleet ships under Adama’s orders. President Roslin is quite upset with Adama and threatens to relieve him of command, insisting that the Cylons be destroyed immediately. Adama does his best to explain, but the Cylon ships suddenly start firing their weapons. A closer inspection of the situation reveals that the Cylons are actually firing on (and eliminating) suicide bombers from the terrorist group called “The Earth Protectorate.” Laura is more than a little surprised once she realizes that the Cylons saved her from an assassination attempt.
Together on Galactica a few minutes later, Adama and Roslin speak to Sharon about these Cylons. Sharon reveals that she can occasionally “hear” their transmissions inside of her, traveling into her system through talk wireless. She explains that these Cylons can “feel” more than “think,” and right now they feel quite proud to have been rescued after waiting for more than 50 years. Adama asks if these models will eventually rebel, and Sharon cites the differences between the early Cylons and advanced sentient beings like herself and the pseudo–Zak Adama. Roslin asks if the older Cylons can “hear” Sharon; she says she hopes not.
Elsewhere, Baltar and Number Six discover that the Centurions can sense modern Cylon presence, after a Centurion bursts into the lab on Medivac 12 and attacks Baltar. Luckily, Starbuck intervenes and shows the Cylon that it’s actually sensing a head from a more recent model, left over from the attack. Starbuck tells Baltar that Adama wants him to study the early model Centurions and find out if they’re truly safe. After Starbuck leaves, Number Six appears and tells Baltar that she’s going to go away for a while, giving him the opportunity to solve this situation on his own.
Back on Galactica, Lee and Adama have a heart-to-heart about Zak. Adama later joins Lt. Gaeta, who has discovered that people who carry the Bonoa parasite (usually found in raw Bonoa eggs, a key component of South Caprican noodles) are safe from the virus currently sweeping the fleet; this includes President Roslin and Billy. Although the parasites prevent but not cure the disease, Gaeta goes on to explain that his own health is moderate due to a recent romantic relationship with a woman who carries the parasite, transmitting it to him through saliva.
Baltar travels back to the Galactica on a Raptor and reveals that he has "tamed" the Centurion he was studying. Meanwhile, Colonel Tigh, who is stricken with the virus, wakes from a dream of the Cylon War to find a group of Centurions at the foot of his sick-bay bed. Saul’s panic turns to bewilderment as the Cylons uncover another terrorist posing as a nurse and knock her out before she can cause any harm.
In the CIC, Adama hears that the Cylons have rounded up all but one of the terrorists aboard Galactica, and he orders them to assemble in the loading bay once they’re done. Baltar notes that he’s created a device that will allow the user to detonate a Centurion’s head if it steps out of line, but Adama still doesn’t put his trust in machines of any kind. The debate ends when Gaeta reports that the last terrorist has been captured. The Cylons march their prisoners in, but they stop suddenly; without warning, one of the Centurions bursts into the holding area and attacks Sharon Valerii.
Everything goes black for Sharon, and she regains consciousness in the cockpit of a Raptor. Alone and confused out in space, she tries to figure out what’s happening. Unfortunately, there’s no time for that—a group of rough-looking, space-suited attackers are deploying from a ship directly in front of her, and they intend to board her Raptor!
