Dynamite Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica series is set during the continuity of the re-imagined SCI FI Channel series. The initial storyline takes place specifically after Episode 207 (“Home, Part 2”) and before Episode 210 (“Pegasus”).
This chapter begins with Dualla speaking to her long-lost brother Darrin in his decontamination cell onboard the Galactica, trying to verify his identity. Darrin insists that he is exactly who he claims to be, and he asks Dualla what their parents – who died in the Cylon attack -will think. Dualla bursts into tears that are revealed as a black, oily substance. As Dualla falls to the floor, a victim of the virus that is sweeping Galactica, Darrin calls the guards for help.
Minutes later, Adama issues a stern warning throughout the fleet, making it clear that anyone offering sanctuary to the Medivac refugees will be dealt with as a criminal. At that very moment, a group of religious zealots “purchase” Zak Adama from the terrorists we met last issue. They believe the coming of Zak and his fellow “Returners” helped fulfill an ancient prophecy.
As Zak argues, the zealots reveal that they are also stricken with the mysterious virus. Zak calls for help, but is greeted by his brother Apollo. Unfortunately, Apollo has no interest in brotherhood and he levels his gun at the man he believes to be nothing more than a Cylon creation.
Meanwhile, Adama and President Roslin discuss the current situation. The virus has affected 83% of the crew and 87% of the pilots onboard Galactica. The FTL drive is still crippled as well; they’re stuck for the time being. Roslin asks about Zak, and Adama says he’ll be treated like any other Cylon. The President reminds Adama of the battlefield he showed her in issue # 0, urging him to be certain of the truth before he passes judgment on the Medivac passengers.
Roslin notes that no more than roughly 10,000 humans would survive if only the FTL-capable ships in the fleet were to jump away. As the conversation comes to a close, Roslin reminds Adama of “sand cats”.
Off the phone now, Adama explains to Tigh that sand cats were desert animals from Caprica. Conservation groups put immense effort into preserving them, and they were about to be taken off the list when they were wiped out by a parasite. Adama sees Roslin’s lesson here: if they keep cutting down their own numbers, the human race will never survive. Tigh disagrees, but there’s no time for debate; Apollo is interrogating Zak.
As Adama watches from an isolation booth, Zak recounts to Lee an encounter with their father on Zak’s graduation day. Despite putting pressure on both boys to become pilots, Adama’s disapproval of Zak carried through even after Zak became a pilot. Adama called him a disgrace on his graduation day, and Zak says that being pulled apart and examined might be a relief in comparison to belonging to his own family.
Soon, Adama contacts Starbuck aboard the Medivac ship. He tells her that she needs to stay put and remain healthy in case she’s needed as a pilot. Doctor Baltar is sent over to help gather medical samples in the hopes of defeating the plague. With that business concluded, Adama and Starbuck finally have a heart-to-heart discussion. The Commander apologizes and insists that even though “this” Zak missed the pain of his own death, it’s all happening again. Starbuck says that it will only happen if they let it.
Baltar arrives on the Medivac and taunts Starbuck for her attraction to Adama boys. He then has an encounter with Number Six in the lab. Six speaks to him of love and sex, noting that he seems to be attracted to Starbuck. When Baltar asks if the Cylons are going to teach the humans about love, Six says “it’ll be interesting to see where this goes” and then vanishes.
Back in Zak’s cell, a tense exchange between the two brothers turns to violence. Zak realizes that Lee has become involved with Starbuck and he attacks him. The guards enter to break it up, but everyone is surprised when an Earth Protectorate terrorist appears and tries to kill Lee. Zak stops the assassin, who is captured. Lee is surprised to say the least.
As Lee reports in, he hears that terrorists are all over the ship, targeting pilots. As Lee and the guards prepare to sweep their sector, Zak offers his help. Soon, the two brothers are in a heated gunfight with terrorists. The heroes win the day, but not before Lee develops signs of the virus and is taken to the sick bay. Adama confronts Zak, but Lee stops them and explains that Zak saved his life.
Adama leads Zak at gunpoint to the CIC, where he finds that Gaeta is also sick. Gaeta heroically held his post, and now Adama sees why: an old Cylon Basestar is headed right for the Galactica. Taking a count of available pilots, there are only three: Starbuck, Zak and Commander Adama himself.
