• Overview:

The flagship of the ragtag fleet, and humanity's remaining Battlestar, the Galactica was constructed more than 50 years before the surprise attack on the Colonies, during the first days of the First Cylon War. Galactica was one of the 12 original battlestars, each representing one of Kobol's colonies.

Designed to operate against an enemy that can infiltrate and disrupt all but the most basic computer-network systems, Galactica is fitted with such antiquated devices as phones with cords, manual valves, and primitive stand-alone computers—all of which helped save her from the Armageddon.

• Techincal Description:

Galactica is designed to protect Colonial power through her compliment of Viper space superiority fighters and Raptor multipurpose strike craft. Multiple-caliber rail gun banks allow for ship-to-ship bombardment as well as supporting a defensive flack screen. Galactica is also equipped with nuclear ordinance suitable for planetary bombardment and ship-to-ship combat.

Flight operations are supported by two massive flight pods which extend from the port and starboard sides of the ship. Along with a massive flight deck, the pods contain Viper launch tubes, landing bays, launch-control and maintenance facilities. The flight pods are partially retracted into the main hull of the ship during FTL jump operations. At the time when the Cylons destroyed the Twelve Colonies, the starboard flight pod had been converted into a museum. However, after serving as a holding area for New Caprica refugees, the flight deck has resumed active duty.

The tactical heart of Galactica is her Combat Information Center (CIC), where the commander oversees the ship's operations. She is also equipped with a Command Observation Room (COR); numerous quarters for officers and enlisted men and women; laboratory facilities; a sickbay; recreation and common areas; a brig; countless storerooms; and state-of-the-art machine and electronic facilities.
