The 1978 Battlestar Galactica movie was the pilot to the original series of Battlestar Galactica by Glen A. Larson. Unlike most pilots for television shows today, this two hour pilot actually screened in movie theaters first, and than moved to television afterwards. In the movie/pilot, the 12 Colonies of Man are attacked by the Cylons, a cybernetic race created by another species, during a supposed peace conference after a long war. Few people escape the destruction of the 12 Colonies aboard numerous ships protected by the last remaining Battlestar, the Battlestar Galactica.
