Batman is a 1989 film in the Batman franchise directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as the title character. Jack Nicholson takes on the role of The Joker while Kim Basinger plays Bruce Wayne's love interest and reporter Vicky Vale. The film was presented in a dark brooding atmosphere typical of Burton. Despite many concerns about the casting of Michael Keaton, better known for comedy, the film was a success and led to the sequel Batman Returns also directed by Burton.
