Batman & Robin (1997) is the fourth film in the Batman film franchise that began with the 1989 film Batman. The film was directed by Joel Schumacher with Akiva Goldsman returning as the film's screenwriter. George Clooney starred as Batman with Chris O'Donnell reprising his role as Robin from the previous film Batman Forever. Also joining the cast was Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl. Michael Gough reprised his role as Alfred Pennyworth and Pat Hingle returned as Commissioner James Gordon. Like the previous film, Batman & Robin's cast featured several notable names and more than one villain. Uma Thurman starred as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze with Jeep Swenson taking on the role of Bane. The film proved to be a critical failure and a disappointment to fans. Still, it ultimately exceeded the $100 million mark but was still below expectations. Critics blasted the film for numerous reasons, include it's casting and poor plot.
