Sergeant Bates is a fictional character on the series Stargate Atlantis portrayed by Dean Marshall. Bates was an original Atlantis Expedition team member and Atlantis' security officer. Bates were among individuals form Earth and Athos captured by the Wraith during the expedition's first off world mission commanded by Marshall Sumner. He was rescued by Colonel John Sheppard and Lt. Aiden Ford.

Bates is a strict by-the-book, officer with a natural tendency towards suspicion which makes him good at his job, but a poor diplomat. Bates was wary of the Athosians and came to suspect Teyla Emmagan or one of her people had betrayed the expedition to the Wraith. Though Teyla was cleared of suspicion, enmity remained between the two, strengthed when it was discovered that Teyla could telepathically link to the Wraith and was vulnerable to being controlled by them. Their antagonism led to a fight broken up Sheppard.

During a Wraith attack, Bates was injured when a Wraith began feeding on him. He survived and returned to Earth. He later left the military and joined the NID. On Earth, he participated with Sheppard and Ronon Dex in a mission to stop a human-form Replicator.
