Barter syndication is a system by which some speculative fiction shows are sold in syndication to local TV stations.

The general principle is that the TV station will get the show for free (or a very small nominal fee) in exchange for giving up some commercial time. This allows the distributor to sell its own advertising on a national basis, making up for the money lost by "giving away" the show to the local station.
