Barsoom series <span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span> A Princess of Mars is the first book in the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950). Burroughs started his writing career in 1911 by contributing to pulp adventure magazines. He is perhaps best known for his creation of Tarzan of the Apes, which first appeared in the October 1912 issue of All-Story Magazine.  The Barsoom series blends early science fiction with romantic adventure. Set in the late 18th century, the series tells the story of Civil War veteran John Carter, and his adventures on the planet we commonly call Mars. The planet he finds, however, is known as Barsoom, and it is a fantastic world burgeoning with alien beings and strange plant life. The books contain some magnificent fighting scenes, with both hand-to-hand and aerial combat, spiced with a world-class romance. Although they are easy to read, readers may find some of the language or concepts hard to understand because of the era in which they were written. Burroughs makes deft use of cliffhangers, so that although the novels can stand alone, readers will be on tenterhooks to find out what happens in the next volume.
