Barry Sonnenfeld (b. April 1, 1953, New York City, NY) is an American director and producer known for his work on comedic films like The Addams Family, and Addams Family Values.
Sonnnefeld graduated from New York University of Film School in 1978 and began his career working in porn before gaining a more credible entree into the film industry as director of photography on the Oscar-nominated documentary In Our Water and later worked with the Coen brothers on films like Raising Arizona, and Miller's Crossing. In 1987 he worked with Danny DeVito on Throw Momma from the Train and followed up with Big, directed by Penny Marshall, When Harry Met Sally directed by Rob Reiner and the adaptation of stephen King's Misery also directed by Reiner.
In 1991, Sonnenfeld made his directorial debut with the horror comedy The Addams Family. He followed up with For Love or Money starring Michael J. Fox and Gabrielle Anwar and the sequel Addams Family Values, a modest success. Sonnenfeld made a big hit with Men in Black and its sequel Men in Black II both starring Will Smith. He also worked with smith on the TV based film Wild Wild West on which he also served as a producer. He also produced the TV series Fantasy Island, The Tick Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and the Disney fantasy hit, Enchanted.
In 2007, Sonnenfeld directed the pie-lette episode of Bryan Fuller's ABC series, Pushing Daisies. He also served as the executive producer on the series. He has also directed several episodes of the comedy series Notes from the Underbelly.
