Baron Mordo is a fictional comic book super villain owned by Marvel Comics. He was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko as the villain in Doctor Strange's origin story. He has been an arch nemesis of the comic book hero ever since.
Karl Mordo grew up influenced by his maternal grandfather. He sought knowledge of mystic forces as a means to acquire power. This journey led him to Tibet and the Ancient One, a mystic and sorcerer supreme of this universe. The Ancient One saw immediately that Mordo had great potential for magic and for evil as well. He took him in as a “disciple”, though really to keep an eye on him. When Dr. Stephen Strange, the jaded surgeon, came to the Ancient One seeking a remedy for the car accident that destroyed his fine motor skills and his professional life, the Tibetan mystic saw his hidden potential as well. Setting Strange up to be his true disciple put the doctor in conflict with Baron Mordo. When he overhears the Baron’s plan to murder the Ancient One and steal his power, Mordo puts Strange under a powerful spell to keep him from telling what he knows. Doctor Strange needs to develop himself into a skilled magician in order to end up saving the Ancient One from Baron Mordo’s machinations.

Mordo’s power is similar to that of Doctor Strange. Mordo is particularly adept at mesmerism and astral projection. He has battled Doctor Strange many times, though is always defeated eventually. Since his time with the Ancient One, Mordo has developed his ability to use black magic, and sought power from evil sources like the Dread Dormammu and the demons Mephisto and Satannish. These attempts never turn out well for him. Due to his attempts to acquire power, Mordo has been banished from Earth, suffered a breakdown, and has even died, though was later returned to life.
