Barbara Steele (December 29, 1937 - ) is a British-born actress who escaped The Rank Organisation’s Charm School in the late 1950s and became an icon in Italian horror movies, thanks to her expressive eyes, distinctive cheekbones and the obsessive sexual undertones of many of her films. Following her breakout role as a revived witch in Mario Bava’s Black Sunday (aka The Mask of Satan/Revenge of the Vampire, 1960), she appeared in AIP’s The Pit and the Pendulum (1961) opposite Vincent Price before returning to Italy to star in The Terror of Dr. Hichcock (aka The Horrible Dr. Hichcock, 1962), The Ghost (1963), Castle of Blood (1964), The Long Hair of Death (1964), The Faceless Monster (aka Nightmare Castle, 1965), Terror Creatures from the Grave (aka Cemetery of the Living Dead, 1965), An Angel for Satan (1966) and The She Beast (aka Revenge of the Blood Beast, 1966). After sharing the screen with Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee and Michael Gough in the disappointing Curse of the Crimson Altar (aka The Crimson Cult, 1968), she lent her iconic presence to David Cronenberg’s The Parasite Murders (aka Shivers/They Came from Within, 1975), Piranha (1978) and Silent Scream (1980). Having become a successful Hollywood television producer, Steele returned to acting as a regular on the briefly-revived TV Series Dark Shadows (1990-1991). Her cameo appearance was apparently deleted from the 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau after a change of director.
