Major science fiction and fantasy awards include (in alphabetical order):
- The International Horror Guild Award is bestowed for "outstanding achievements in the field of horror and dark fantasy." Recommendations are taken from the public at large, but a panel of judges determines nominations and the final awards. Its physical award is associated with a figurine or representation of a gargoyle.
- The James Tiptree, Jr. Award is an annual literary prize of $1000 for "science fiction or fantasy that explores and expands the roles of women and men for work by both women and men". It's named after Alice B. Sheldon, who wrote under the pseudonym James Tiptree, Jr. for many years before revealing her identity and real name. It is an adjudicated award.
- The Nebula Awards are bestowed by members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) to acknowledge excellence in science fiction writing. The award itself is a transparent block with an embedded glitter spiral nebula. Nebula Awards is a registered trademark of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
- The Philip K. Dick Award is given to the best original paperback published each year in the US. Five judges read submissions from publishers and determine both nominees and winner. Judges choose their own successors and only writers or academics are eligible to be judges. The awards were created and named for the writer who, though increasingly renowned after his death in 1982, was published mostly in undistinguished paperback editions during his career.
- The Scream Awards were first presented by Spike TV in 2006. The awards cover horror, sci fi, fantasy, and comic books. Fans vote for nominees. Official Site
- The World Fantasy Awards are associated with the World Fantasy Convention and recognize outstanding fantasy. Two nominations for World Fantasy in each category come from the associated convention with further nominations and final awards being determined by a panel of judges. These judges change each year and judges may serve only once. The physical award is a silver bust of H. P. Lovecraft designed by Gahan Wilson.
