Asuras

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Asuras (M7R-227) is the home planet of the Asurans on the series Stargate Atlantis. The Asuran main city that houses their Stargate is a near exact replica of Atlantis. The Asurans first appeared in the episode "Progeny". The address was discovered in the Ancient database with no accompanying information and contact was made between Atlantis and what appeared to be living Ancients. The Asurans invited the Atlantis team to visit their city and Dr. Elizabeth Weir took the opportunity to join them.

Not long after their first contact, it became apparent that the Asurans were not Ancients and were in fact not humans but machines that evolved from nanites created by the Ancients. According to the Asurans, the Ancients planned to destroy the Wraith using nanite technology. The experiment failed and the nanites evolved higher intelligence eventually taking on human form. The Asurans advised the Ancients on dealing with the Wraith but the Ancients refused their council and instead attempted to destroy them. A few nanites survived and replicated.

The Asurans rebuilt a grand civilization, modeling it after Atlantis. From the view of the main city-ship, the city expands outward dwarfing Atlantis in size. Despite their achievements, some Asurans consider their civilization to be stagnant. They hope to one day achieve Ascension as the Ancients did. To meet their goal of doing so, they requested the Atlantis team's help in rewriting their base program to remove their tendency towards violence.

The Asuran city is a prime example of a fully active Ancient City. The Asurans do not lack for power and use the same Zero Point Modules the Ancients use to power Atlantis and their outposts. The main section is capable of flight and during the episode, separated from the rest of the city and left the planet, heading towards Atlantis.

Sheppard's team twice infiltrated the Asuran main city. In the episode "Lifeline" they successfully stole a Zero Point Module from the city and reactivated the Replicator's code to destroy the Wraith. Unfortunately this action forced them to later return to the city in "Be All My Sins Remember'd" to activate a plan to destroy the Asurans once and for all. Their plan was successful and Asuras was completely destroyed in the process.
