Asgard Protected Planets Treaty

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

In the series, Stargate SG-1, The Protected Planets Treaty was an agreement established between the Asgard high council and the Goa'uld System Lords. The agreement assured that the planets specified in the treaty would be protected from Goa'uld attack and encroachment so long as the Asgard did not interfere in their development. Though they can progress naturally occurring phenomena, they cannot cause it. The planets were not permitted to advance to a level where they may become a threat to the Gao'uld. The Asgard also cannot protect the planet from natural phenomena. If either the Goa'uld or the Asgard break the treaty in any way the treaty is rendered null and void. The Asgard are capable of enforcing this treaty due to their superior level of technology over the Goa'uld.

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

Planets given protection by the treaty include Cimmeria and K'Tau. The Asgard and representatives of the System Lords met to negotiate the inclusion of Earth in the treaty. The Goa'uld demanded a limitation be placed on Earth's technological development and the seizure of both the planet's stargates. Following the attempted assassination of Cronus, by Nirrti during the meeting, Lord Yu permitted Earth to keep its Stargate program and maintain its technological progress without fear of Goa'uld attack("Fair Game").

The Goa'uld broke their promise not to attack Earth on more than one occasion. In "Between Two Fires", the Goa'uld attempted to bypass the treaty by forcing The Tollan to send a bomb through the gate, bypassing its iris using their phase-shifting technology. In "Failsafe", the Goa'uld sent a naquadah enriched asteroid hurtling towards Earth knowing any attempts to destroy it would destroy Earth. SG-1 managed to save the planet and the treaty was essentially nullified making it possible for the Asgard to give Earth technology to enhance Prometheus in exchange for their aid defeating the Replicators.
