Plot
High school teacher Johnny Smith survived a car accident only to spend the next six years in a coma with no expectation of ever waking up. He unexpectedly regains consciousness however, and finds he has a disturbing new gift. When he touches things or people he can see things (an ability parapsychologists call psychometry); sometimes things that have happened and sometimes things that will happen. The doctors believe his eerily accurate visions are the result of activity in a "dead zone" area within his brain that is compensating for damaged portions from the accident.
Though Johnny is initally troubled by his gift he begins to use it to help others including his former fiancee Sarah Bannerman and her husband, the town Sheriff, Walt Bannerman. Before his accident, Sarah and Johnny were planning to get married but now awake, his entire life is changed. Sarah is married to Walt and they're raising his son, Johnny, as their own.
With the help of Walt and his physical therapist and close friend Bruce Lewis, Johnny uses his abilities to solve mysteries and uncover crimes. He soon begins to have visions of an apocalyptic future which he believes will be brought about by the rise of local politician Greg Stillson to power. Johnny must do everything in his power to change the future.
