Arthur Lubin (July 25 1898 – May 12, 1995) After his work with Abbott and Costello, Universal entrusted director Lubin with its lavish Phantom of the Opera (1943) remake. But despite the added Technicolor, he ensured it was as dull as his horror quickies Black Friday (1940) and The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946). Forced by the studio to accept a percentage of the profits to direct Francis (1949), about a talking mule, the movie spawned six sequels (five of which he directed) and Lubin successfully reworked the concept into the TV series Mr. Ed (1961-65).
