Aqualad is a fictional superhero comic book character, formerly the teen sidekick of the hero, Aquaman, owned by DC Comics. His powers were similar to Aquaman’s. Aqualad could swim underwater and breathe water like a fish. He could communicate with fish telepathically, and had some degree of enhanced strength. Unfortunately, he could only exist on land for an hour before he needed to return to the ocean. Aqualad was a founding member of the Teen Titans, a group of teen sidekicks of the Justice League members.
Aqualad has had a rather varying relationship with Aquaman over the decades. He had a long romance with another Atlantean named Tula (sometimes called Aquagirl) until she was killed during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Years later, he married another water-breathing character named Dolphin with whom he had a daughter.
Character Origin
Garth was the son of the exiled queen of the Idyllists, a colony of magic practicing Atlanteans that settled in the Hidden Valley 4000 years ago. Because he was born with purple eyes, superstitious and narrow minded Atlanteans further exiled him to a seabed leagues away from Atlantis, thinking he would die. Garth somehow survived and eventually was adopted by Aquaman and became his kid sidekick.
Years later, Garth, now estranged from Aquaman, came into his inheritance as a lost prince of the Idyllists. Gaining powerful abilities, such as emitting powerful energy blasts from his eyes, the ability to boil and freeze large amounts of water, and manipulate magical energies, and many others. As such, he has changed his name to Tempest.
Tempest was eventually crippled to the extent he can no longer breathe water and has lost his powers, due to the Spectre. The unbonded Wrath is influenced by Alexander Luthor to destroy magic, taking on all the DC Universe magical beings in the limited series Day of Vengence (2005). Garth also lost track of Dolphin and their child.
Garth was featured in this weakened condition with the new Aquaman character during the "Sword of Atlantis" run. Tempest was last seen seeking his lost family and his lost powers with the help of a sorceress named Leah.
