In Egyptian mythology, Apophis—also known as Apep—is an evil demon, the personification of chaos, and the serpent god. As such, the Goa'uld Apophis on the series Stargate SG-1 is an apt characterization. Apophis was an enemy of Ra and an arch nemesis of SG-1 who had a penchant for returning when least expected. Apophis was played by Peter Williams and appeared several times in the show's first five seasons.

Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

History

Apophis was first encountered in the series premiere "Children of the Gods." He came through the stargate unexpectedly and attacked the surprised guards. He also took a female officer prisoner. Not long after, his guards visited Abydos and abducted several Abydonians including Skaara and Sha're. Apophis made Sha're the host of his queen Amonet and Skaara the host of his son Klorel.

Apophis, defied the Goa'uld by impregnating Sha're with the intention of creating a Harcesis. Sha're gave birth to a son, Shi'fu who possessed all the knowledge of the goa'uld. Amonet took the child to Kheb and hid him from Apophis.

Apophis was one of the Goa'uld System Lords. In the absence of his enemy Ra, killed by the Tau'ri, Apophis grew in power. He attempted to invade Earth but was thwarted by SG-1. He and Klorel managed to escape the destruction of their ships. Apophis fell victim to his enemy Sokar who killed him. He died on Earth, after begging for Asylum. Sokar demanded his return and resurrected him, and imprisoned him on the hellish moon Ne'tu.

When SG-1 killed Sokar by destroying Ne'tu, Apophis escaped to Delmak and took over Sokar's army. In the episode "The Serpent's Venom," Apophis met with the goa'uld Heru'ur in the Tobin Minefield to discuss a possible alliance. The Tok'ra sabotaged the meeting and Apophis killed Heru'ur and took over his fleet becoming even more powerful.

Apophis attacked the abandoned Tok'ra base on Vorash but SG-1, in league with the Tok'ra, blew up the system's star destroying Apophis' fleet. Apophis survived and was sent, along with SG-1 several million light years away to a new galaxy by the explosion. He brainwashed Teal'c and took over SG-1's ship after Replicators assume control of his. The Replicators follow him to the new ship and take it over as well. The Replicator-modified engines returned the ship to the Milky Way quickly and emerged from hyperspace above Delmak. SG-1 sabotaged the vessel's control crystals and it crash landed on the planet while SG-1 escaped via a cargo vessel. Apophis is presumed to have died in the explosion.
