Annihilus is a fictional comic book villain owned by Marvel Comics. Annihilus is an evolved insectoid life form that developed in the Negative Zone, a dimension discovered by Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. He is a megalomaniacal world conqueror. He is a creation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four Annual #6 (1968).
Annihilus evolved from a spore accidentally released when an alien race called the Tyannan crash landed on a barren planet. The spore, which already possessed mutated intelligence, used a knowledge transfer helmet it found in the space ship to gain the knowledge of those that bio-engineered him. In this way, he reached true sentience, and the being Annihilus was born.
Annihilus grew in strength and intelligence, eventually using the remains of the crashed ship to create the cosmic control rod, enabling him to manipulate great forces of energy. This led to him beginning to conquer his own world, as well as neighboring worlds of the Negative Zone.
Annihilus has great endurance due to his insectoid chitinous exoskeleton, and can withstand intense external pressure. With his wings he can fly up to 150 miles per hour, and can hurtle through space with the power of his cosmic control rod. He has clashed many times with the Fantastic Four and other members of the Marvel Universe when they have gained access to the Negative Zone. He has also attempted to gain access to our dimension on a number of occasions, seeking to expand his empire and to revenge himself on the Fantastic Four.
Annihilus further has attacked a part of our own universe, claiming that pieces of it have expanded into his own Negative Zone dimension, making the Andromeda Galaxy rightfully his. He has attacked that section of space with a huge armada of Negative Zone space ships called the Annihilation Wave. Eventually he was defeated, though the story hinted at the end that Annihilus himself somehow survived.
