Annette O'Toole

Annette O'Toole is an American actress born on April 1, 1952, in Houston, Texas, to William West Toole Jr. and Dorothy Geraldine Niland. O'Toole started her career as a dancer before turning to acting. In her early career she appeared on My Three Sons, The Virginian and Gunsmoke. She guest starred on several TV series throughout the 70's including several western series.

She had starring roles in the TV movies Love for Rent (1979), Vanities (1981) and a movie about Tammy Wynette, Stand by Your Man in which she played the country singer. Feature film roles included Foolin' Around with Gary Busey and Superman III as Lana Lang in 1983.

The late '80s brought several more TV Movie roles including Strong Medicine and Broken Vows. In the 90s she appeared in Stephen King's It, White Lies and A Mother's Revenge with future Smallville actress Chloe Mack. She also starred in an episode of The Outer Limits and had a recurring role on Nash Bridges as Lisa Bridges.

In 2001, she starred as Dottie Thorson on the short-lived series The Huntress. In the same year, she took on the role of Martha Kent in the series Smallville. It was her second time playing a character from the Superman franchise. Matha Kent is O'Toole's longest running role. The series is currently in its sixth season.


Personal Life

O'Toole married actor Bill Geisslinger in 1982 and had two children. The couple later divorced and she remarried to Michael McKean on March 20, 1999.


Awards

O'Toole cowrote the song A Mighty Wind with husband Michael McKean. The song was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Satellite Award and won a Seattle Film Critics Award. She was also nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role as Rose Fitzgerald in "The Kennedys of Massachusetts". She won a Feature Film Award in 2002 in the category Best Actress for her role as Nora in Temptation. She was also nominated for a Saturn Award in 1984 in the category best Supporting Actress for her role as Lana Lang in Superman III.
