Anne Jacqueline Hathaway (b. November 12, 1982, Brooklyn, New York) is an American actress known for her roles in The Princess Diaries, and Ella Enchanted. Hathaway was born to Kate McCauley and Gerard Hathaway. She attended Wyoming School in Millburn, New Jersey and was also admitted to the acting program at The Barrow Group in New York. She attended Vassar College, taking a break from film after her breakout hit with The Princess Diaries. She later transferred to NYU.
Hathaway's first screen role came with the 1999 series Get Real. She followed up with her breakout role alongside Julie Andrews in the Princess Diaries based on the Meg Cabot novels. The film was a huge hit and She followed up with another starring, if lower profile role in The Other Side of Heaven and the Charles Dickens adaptation, Nicholas Nickleby. Her live action genre film debut came in 2004 with Ella Enchanted. Other notable films include the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement , the animated feature Hoodwinked!, controversial and Academy Award-nominated Brokeback Mountain opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl Streep, and Becoming Jane.
In 2008, Hathaway will appear in Passengers, Dancing with Shiva and Get Smart. The comedy Bride Wars which will costar Kate Hudson is slated for a 2009 release.
