Formerly one of the world's most vicious vampires, Angel was cursed by a gypsy family as punishment for killing their daughter. The gypsies restored his soul, thus ending his two-century reign of terror as Angelus. Following the restoration of his soul, he experienced remorse and mental torment for all the wrongs he had committed. To atone for his evil deeds as Angelus, Angel fought against evil, protecting those who needed his help.

For three years, he lived in Sunnydale, California, fighting evil by Buffy's side. When their ill-fated epic romance came to an end, he left for Los Angeles to start a new life. Despite not having a hellmouth of its own, Los Angeles proved rife with demons, vampires, lawyers, and many other evils. There was no shortage of evil for Angel to fight. He recieved help in his task from some old friends and a few new ones, and formalized his fight by starting Angel Investigations, a private investigation firm, which specialized in helping people fight some of their personal demons.

Series

Angel was a darker, more adult series than Buffy. Most of the main characters came together as a result of tragedies in their past, going on to suffer even greater tragedies during their time together as a part of Angel Investigations.

There were a few crossovers between Angel and Buffy but, for the most part, the shows remained separate in both plot and character development. The characters that crossed over from Buffy, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce and Cordelia Chase, both underwent vast changes as their characters developed and matured, becoming almost entirely new people and retaining only the basic characteristics of their Buffy personas. The much-loved Buffy character Spike, Buffy's nemesis/ally, joined the cast of Angel in its final season, providing a humorous counterpoint to Angel's brooding personality.

After five seasons on the WB Network, it was announced that Angel would not return for a sixth season, and the show's story arc was quickly tied up. Fans petitioned for the show's renewal but the network's decision was final. The last episode, "Not Fade Away," aired on May 19, 2004.

Memorable Quotes

Angel: Well, someone has to make sure he knows the facts of life. My track record with the whole man/woman thing isn't . . . you know, I don't wanna use the words tragic farce but . . .

Cordelia: Darla. It's all about Darla. One thing you can say about Angel, at least he's consistent. It's always some little blonde driving him over the edge.

Angel: Oh, yeah. I saw their production of Giselle in 1890. Cried like a baby. And I was evil!

Cordelia: I'm not a sniveling whiny little cry-Buffy. I'm the nastiest girl in Sunnydale history. I take crap from no one.

Allen Francis Doyle: Well, if it's a fight they want—can't someone else give it to 'em? Just seems unfair, you know? You gotta save all the helpless types around here, and now you gotta fight the Apocalypse as well?

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce: I'm going to thrash you within an inch of your life—and then I'm going to take that inch.

Trivia

The character of Gunn was named after actors James Gunn and Sean Gunn.
