Amy Adams (b. August 20, 1974, Aviano, Pordenone, Italy) is an American actress born to Kathryn and Richard Adams. Raised in a Mormon family in Castle Rock, Colorado, Kathryn is one of the couple's seven children. Adams performed in her teens in the school choir and intended to pursue a career as a ballerina. She later put aside a career in dance for one of more variety performing with Boulder's Dinner Theatre and Country Dinner Playhouse as a dancer in productions such as Brigadoon and A Chorus Line.
She moved to Minneapolis where she worked in regional dinner theatre before an injury left her free to audition for the film Drop Dead Gorgeous which featured Kirstie Alley and Kirsten Dunst. She landed the part and during the filming, she was encouraged to move to LA to pursue acting as a career by Kirstie Alley. She followed up on the advice and landed a role in a TV series followup to the film Cruel Intentions. The series never worked out but the filmed episodes were turned into a direct-to-video release, Cruel Intentions 2. Adams also landed a role in the film Psycho Beach party and appeared on That 70s Show, Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville.
In 2002, she landed her first significant role in the film Catch Me If You Can featuring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film did not advance her career significantly and she later appeared on the shortlived series Dr. Vegas. She finally gained notice in the Independent Academy Award-nominated film Junebug which earned her an Oscar nomination for her supporting role. That success led to roles in the comedies, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and the hit Disney fantasy Enchanted which showed off her singing talents. She won a Saturn Award for he performance in Enchanted and was also nominated for a golden Globe.
In 2007, she appeared alongside Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson's War and, in 2008, starred in the romance Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day , and Doubt. She also filmed Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian which comes to theatres in 2009.
