Among the Hidden is a 1998 novel written by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The novel is set in a future where uneven food distribution leads to violence and the government has undertaken drastic methods to reduce overpopulation. Couples are allowed only two children and the Population Police enforce these strict regulations. Third children become known as Shadow Children, and it is the job of the ruthless population police is to kill them.
