Amanda Tapping was born on August 28, 1965, in Rochford, Essex, England, and grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She studied at the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Art, continuing to study theater after graduation, and appearing in several stage productions. Her first television gigs were commercials. She co-founded the improvisational comedy troupe Random Acts in the early 1990's, performing sketch comedy with two other women, Katherine Jackson and Anne Marie Kerr, in Toronto venues. At the same time, she began to make guest appearances on series such as Street Legal, Forever Knight, and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.

Tapping made the leap to features with a part in Rent-a-Kid in 1995, along with several telefilm roles at about the same time, including in Net Worth, The Haunting of Lisa, and miniseries Degree of Guilt. Then, in 1997, Tapping helped launch the show that was to become U.S. television's longest-running science fiction series: Stargate SG-1. Based on the Dean Devlin/Roland Emmerich movie Stargate, the series starred Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel Jack O'Neill, Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Amanda Tapping as Captain Samantha "Sam" Carter. The character combines scientific expertise with a cool head when the plot turns to action sequences, and Tapping's statuesque blonde beauty and vulnerable smile made her an instant fan favorite.

Tapping continued to make occasional guest appearances on other series, such as The X-Files, Millennium, and The Outer Limits. Her work on the Stargate series has gained her a number of award nominations, including Leo Awards, Saturn Awards, Gemini Awards, and others. Her fan following is both immense and fervent—leading to "Amanda Tapping" conventions that allow fans to meet, chat with, and get their photos taken with Tapping.

2000—Nominated for a Leo Award for Best Lead Performance in the episode, Point of View, Stargate SG-1.
