The planet's surface once supported life but is now uninhabitable due to a disaster in the distant past. The last remaining inhabitant is Harlan whose consciousness was transferred to an android replica.
Harlan lives in a large facility below the planet's surface built to house the survivors of the unspecified cataclysm. There were originally about one thousand survivors of the cataclysm but problems with the transfer process resulted in several losses including the creator of the facility and his knowledge. Of those that survived, several later went through the stargate with portable power sources to sustain them and they never returned to Altair. Others tired of their existence and returned to the surface to face their fate.
The facility is run by geothermal energy from the planet's core. The thermal compensator must be periodically vented of the radioactive acid rain from the surface that finds its way into the ventilation system.
For help in running the facility, and company to ease his loneliness, Harlan copied SG-1's consciousness into android replicas of their own bodies. After they discovered what had been done to them, the duplicates decided to remain on the planet with Harlan.
