The Alpha Lanterns are members of the Alpha Corps, an elite division of the Green Lantern Corps, a fictional organization that is part of the back story of the comic book superhero Green Lantern. Green Lantern is owned by DC Comics.
The Alpha Corps are the internal affairs division of the The Green Lantern Corps.
The Green Lantern Corps is a group of inter-stellar peace keepers commanded by a group of blue aliens called the Guardians of the Universe. Each Green Lantern has a “power ring” that is powered by green light energy that can do practically anything its wearer wills it to do. Their job is to enforce order and justice in the universe.
The Alpha Corps' job is to enforce the rules of the Corps on other Green Lanterns. They have the power to drain a Green Lantern’s ring of power. They act as internal affairs or military police officiers within the organization.
The Alpha Lanterns are former Green Lanterns outfitted with Manhunter Technology, making them, in fact cyborgs.
The Manhunters were artificial beings created by the Guardians before the time of the Green Lantern Corps. They were efficient and logical law enforcers, but never could exercise the judgment and compassion that true justice requires. It is for this reason that the Guardians replaced them with sentient beings, forming the Green Lantern Corps.
Alpha Lanterns carry some of the robotic parts of the Manhunters, making them efficient as the Manhunters, but sentient and capable of making good decisions like the Green Lanterns, at least in theory. They carry a power battery in their chest cavity as part of their body, so that they themselves never need to recharge their rings.
