Alexis Cruz born September 29, 1974, is an American actor of Puerto Rican heritage, best known for his role as Skaara in the film Stargate and its spin-off series Stargate SG-1. Cruz was born in The Bronx, New York. He attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York and then went on to Boston University where he majored in Independent Technical Theatre.
Cruz's first acting job was in a Spanish-language commercial for macaroni and cheese. His first role of significance was a 1985 guest sport on The Cosby Show as Enrique Tarron. He followed up with a lead role in the PBS series Gryphon.
His film career began with roles in such films as The Pick-up Artist in 1987 and Rooftops in 1989. He acted with Anthony Quinn in the The Old Man and the Sea and played himself on the beloved TV series Sesame Street.
By age 17 he was directing theatre at the School of Performing Arts to record-breaking success. He also performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Although he was already successful, his breakout role came when he played the role of Skaara in the film Stargate. He then starred in the CBS mini-series The Streets of Laredo as Joey Garza.
After his graduation from Boston University, he starred in the Emmy-nominated HBO film P.O.W.E.R.: The Eddie Maros Story in which he played the title role. Passionate about theatre, he returned to the stage several times and toured nationally. He also participated in East LA Classic Theatre Teacher's program which aimed to bring theatre education to East Los Angeles schools. He has also been a spokesman for the National Council de La Raza. He is also a member of the National Hispanic Foundation of the Arts which provides undergraduate and graduate scholarships for Hispanic-Americans interested in a career in the entertainment industry. For his devotion to the Hispanic community, he has been honored by Hispanic Unity USA.
When Stargate was brought to the small screen in the TV series Stargate SG-1, Cruz, along with his co-star from the film, Erick Avari, reprised their roles as Skaara and Kasuf. Cruz also had a recurring role as the angel Raphael on the CBS series Touched by an Angel. Cruz continued to guest star on several TV series including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ER, LAPD Blue and American Family in which he played Sgt. Joaquin Garcia in several episodes. His most recent roles include the sci-fi TV movie Slayer, Tortilla Heaven and The Last Time.
