Alexander Courage (b. December 10, 1919 – May 15, 2008) was an American composer best known for composing the theme music for Star Trek: The Original Series. Courage's music also appears in several Star Trek films as well as such notable films as The Poseidon Adventure, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Jurassic Park, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, The Mummy and Hollow Man.
Courage was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in New Jersey. He attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and graduated in 1941. He then joined the the Army Air Corps. Following WWII, Couage worked as a a composer for CBS radio shows and later as an orchestrator and arranger at MGM.
Despite his contributions to [[]]genre films, Courage was never a big science fiction fan. His Trek theme was inspired by the song "Beyond the Blue Horizon". The wooshing sound of the starship Enterprise in the opening credits of the series was voiced by Courage.
