Alaskan)
Alaska is a northwestern state in the United States, north of Canada. Once Russian territory, the vast region was purchased by the United States for $7,200,000 on October 18, 1867. Though considered, at the time, a losing bargain, Alaska has become more valuable to the United States than ever imagined as much for it's resources as its natural beauty.
Alaska in Fiction
Several novels have used Alaska as the backdrop of dramatic science fiction plots. In the alternative history novel Russian Amerika, Stoney Compton explores a reality in which the Russians still control Alaska. Similarly, though vastly different in style and plot, Mary Janice Davidson in The Royal Pain presents Alaska as territory never sold to the US ruled over by an eccentric royal family. Other noteworthy works set in the state include Willis Bird's The Alaska Incident, and Guardian by Joe Haldeman.
