Alfredo James Pacino (b. April 25, 1940) is an Academy Award-winning American actor considered an all time great. Pacino is also an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Tony award winner among numerous other awards. Pacino's most acclaimed work includes the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather Trilogy and Tony Montana in Scarface. He has also appeared in the genre films S1m0ne and The Devil's Advocate.
Pacino was born in Manhattan, New York City to Italian-American parents Salvatore Pacino and Rose Gerrard. His parents divorced when he was only two years old and he grew up in The Bronx with hi mother and Sicilian grandparents. Pacino attended the High School for the Performing Arts but dropped out before graduating. He later studied acting with coach, Lee Strasberg. He proved to be a gifted actor and performed on stage and won an Obie award for his performance in The Indian Wants the Bronx. He also won a Tony award for his supporting role in Does the Tiger Wear a Necktie.
Pacino made his TV debut in a 1968 guest role on N.Y.P.D. and his film debut in 1969 in Me, Natalie. It was his second film role, in The Panic in Needle Park as a heroin addict that got him noticed by director Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola cast Pacino in 1972's The Godfather. The role earned him his first Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. His next film Scarecrow with Gene Hackman wasn't as successful but he won raves for his starring role in Serpico (1973) and The Godfather sequel, The Godfather II (1974).
On a roll, he appeared in the title role in the films Bobby Deerfield and Dog Day Afternoon which earned him his fourth Oscar nomination. The 80s proved less successful for Pacino and his appearances in Cruising and Author!Author! neither of which were particularly successful. In 1983, he starred in Scarface. The film was not a critical success but did well financially and garnered a Golden Globe nomination. It became a fan favorite as well as one of one of his own personal marks of success.
After the unsuccessful Revolution he took a break from films and returned to the stage. He appeared in productions of Julius Caesar, and National Anthems. He then worked on filming the off-Broadway play, The Local Stigmatic, though the film remains unreleased. He earned his sixth Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1990 film Dick Tracy and returned to The Godfather story this time as the mafia Don in The Godfather III'. The film did not perform up to expectations but his next film. the romantic comedy, Frankie and Johnny did well.
Pacino finally won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in 1992's Scent of a Woman playing retired colonel Frank Slade. In the same year, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Glengarry Glen Ross. He followed up with the acclaimed Carlito's Way and the 1997 film Donnie Brasco.
Pacino made his genre film debut late in his career in The Devil's Advocate in 1997. His next film was the multiple Oscar-nominated film The Insider. In 2002 he starred in the unsuccessful S1m0ne and in 2003, The Recruit with Colin Farrell. Also in 2003, he appeared in the Golden Globe winning miniseries Angels in America which earned him an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. Other roles include The Merchant of Venice (2004), and Ocean's 13. In 2007, he played Salvador Dali in Dali & I: The Surreal Story.
