Ford is a munitions expert with boyish good looks and enthusiasm. During the first season his role was mainly supportive. In the second season opener, "The Siege, Part 3", Ford was attacked and fed on by a Wraith. When a grenade exploded nearby, they were both blown off the balcony into the ocean. Ford survived and was rescued but it was revealed he survived only because the Wraith used an Enzyme that strengthened the human body for feeding. The explosion caused the Wraith feeding on him to flood his body with enzyme and he was able to survive, face down, in the water for over an hour.
The enzyme, unfortunately, resulted in instant addiction and other changes. He became paranoid and aggressive and his left eye turned completely black. The left side of his face also wrinkled and appeared stiff. They later discovered he was immune to Wraith stunners and showed greatly increased tolerance to pain.
Ford's addiction and mental instability led him to believe he could not trust his friends. He left Atlantis and began to hunt Wraith in order to get more of the enzyme, a feat made possible by his increased strength and faster reflexes. While trying to find Ford, Sheppard came across a Wraith Runner, Ronon Dex. Dex tried to help the team with Ford but Ford proved formidable and escaped Sheppard's team by hijacking a Wraith culling beam and escaping aboard one of their ships.
Though Ford was assumed dead by the team, he escaped the Wraith hive ship and took up residence on a friendly planet. There, he managed to convince several locals of the wonderful benefits of the Wraith enzyme. He formed a team and together they hunted Wraith for more enzyme. They eventually captured several Wraith and imprisoned them to gain a steady supply of enzyme. They also raided Genii outposts, stealing equipment as a part of a greater plan.
Ford kidnapped Sheppard, Teyla, Ronon, and McKay and drugged them with the enzyme which he’d refined and added to their food. He convinced them to participate in a plan to destroy a Wraith hive ship. He kept Sheppard free of the enzyme so he could be an objective witness to the greatness of his plan. Ford believed the enzyme could even the odds between humans and the Wraith.
Ford’s plan involved getting Sheppard to fly a Wraith dart he'd captured into a hive ship. Sheppard managed to successfully operate the ship and with Ford’s strike team and Ronon and Teyla they flew into a hive ship. Ford’s men were lost when the Dart went on autopilot once inside the hive, and they were reconstituted off the landing platform. The team was imprisoned and they began to suffer withdrawal symptoms.
Ford became separated from the team and managed to access more enzyme but Sheppard's escape plans led to the destruction of the ship leaving Ford's fate unknown. Though he is presumed dead, Sheppard believes his resourcefulness may have led to his
survival.
