Agatha Harknessis a fictional comic book character, a supporting character in the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, superhero teams owned by Marvel Comics.

Agatha Harkness was a witch with mystic powers. She had a familiar, a black cat named Ebony who could sense the prsence of magical beings.

We first met Agatha when she was hired by the Fantastic Four’s Reed and Sue Richards to care for their newborn child, Franklin Richards. Knowing that their he might be threatened by their powerful enemies, the superhero couple hired a powerful witch to safeguard their child. Also, she would help control the boy's cosmic power. She would end up helping both the Fantastic Four and others through many a mystic crisis.

Agatha was one of the original witches from the time of the witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts. She was part of a colony of witches established in Colorado called New Salem. Agatha also kind of a tutor in magic, and helped the Scarlet Witch understand and control the magical aspect of her powers.

Agatha had a son called Nicholas Scratch who became a villain that threatened New Salem and the Fantastic Four. Her grandchildren by Nicholas were called the Salem Seven. They were also part of the New Salem community, and also deadly adversaries of both the Fantastic Four and the Scarlet Witch. When the Salem

Seven captured Agatha and seemed to burn her at the stake, Agatha was able to send an astral message to the Scarlet Witch requesting help. It was magical energy that the Scarlet Witch had channeled during the ensuing battle with the Salem Seven that she unconsciously used to create her artificial children. This magic was somehow drawn from the demon Mephisto. When he called the energy back, the children went with it, a tragedy that contributed to the Scarlet Witch's breakdown. Agatha helped forstall that breakdown by enabling the Scarlet Witch to forget the twins temporarily.

It seems that Agatha Harkness had returned only to be killed by the Scarlet Witch when she had her nervous breakdown in the crossover limited series Avengers Disassembled. However, Agatha had been believed killed by then by the Salem Seven, so it is possible that Wanda had used her reality altering powers to re-animate her temporarily.
