Adric was a character who appeared regularly in seasons 18 and 19 of the long-running series Doctor Who. He was a traveling companion to both the fourth and the fifth incarnations of the Doctor. As played by actor Matthew Waterhouse, Adric was unquestionably a bright young man. He had been awarded a gold star for mathematical excellence and his mathematical abilities sometimes seemed to rival the Doctor's own. Yet, he was also slightly arrogant about his abilities, highly insecure and had a tendency to complain. All of these characteristics made him one of the series least popular companions. Fans of the program generally describe him as "annoying."

When the Doctor and Romana found themselves in the parallel universe known as E-space by accident, they first landed on a planet known as Alzarius (in 1980's "Full Circle"). The Alzarian youth Adric stumbled onto the TARDIS while fleeing from a mysterious disturbance in the marshes that had just claimed the life of one of his society's leaders. There, he met the Doctor and Romana, who quickly became interested in the events occurring on the surrounding planet. Once the Doctor had helped the local population to resolve their difficulties, he departed the planet. However, he had a stowaway: Adric.
1982's "Earthshock" found the Doctor and his companions aboard a spaceship loaded with high explosives whose controls had been locked into crashing on Earth. Confident that he could break the code locking the controls, Adric refused to abandon the ship, resulting presumably in his own death as the ship later crashed.
The Doctor was seen in later episodes to be haunted by Adric's death.
