Spoiler Warning: Plot details and/or information about the ending follow. If you wish to enjoy the work first, stop reading here and return at another time.

Legend says Kensei was a Japanese hero who saved Japan from the warlord Whitebeard. However, Hiro Nakamura's travels to the year 1671 in which Takezo lived, revealed that Takezo was an English man with less than heroic tendencies and an ability to spontaneously regenerate from any wound.

Hiro took on the task of transforming Takezo into the hero of legend but Takezo turned against him after Takezo witnessed him kissing his love, Yaeko, the swordsmith's daughter. Takezo betrayed Hiro to Whitebeard and when Hiro escaped and proved the true hero of the plot by defeating Whitebeard, Takezo vowed to lay waste to all that Hiro loved.

Takezo survived to the twenty-first century where he became known as Adam Monroe. Adam was one of the founding members of "The Company" the visionary who believed that the role of the Heroes was to save the world from itself. His methods however, conflicted with those of some of the others. He was locked away in a company facility for thirty years before he was joined there by Peter Petrelli. The two cooperated in an escape and Adam used his blood to heal Peter's brother who suffered severe radiation burns from an encounter with Peter in which he lost control of his abilities and exploded.

Adam and Peter were pursued by the company and parted ways with a promise to rendezvous in Montreal. During their time apart, Adam set to work murdering Company founders including Takezo Kensei. He also ordered former associate Maury Parkman to murder Angela Petrelli and Bob Bishop, though both attempts failed.

When Peter and Adam reuinited, Adam discovered Peter had amnesia and did not remember him. Adam encouraged Peter to use his regenerative powers to heal his mind which proved successful. Peter informed Nathan of his recent visit to the future and the devastating Shanti virus pandemic. Adam revealed that during his years at the company, they experimented with the same virus and created a deadly strain.

The two visited former company scientist, Victoria Pratt hoping to learn the virus' location so they could destroy it. Peter questioned Victoria and discovered the location of the virus. Victoria attempted to warn him that Adam had no intention of saving the world, he only wants the virus to make a second attempt at releasing it. Adam killed Victoria under the pretense of protecting Peter and the two continued on their journey to the company facility at Odessa, Texas.

Powers

Adam seems to be able to heal from any wound. He first recognized the ability when he was shot by arrows in the episode "Lizards". He survived a massive gunpowder explosion in "Out of Time" and survived, ageless until the twenty-first century. Adam's blood has healing properties as seen in "Four Months Ago" when his blood healed Nathan Petrelli. His abilities may be the same as those of Claire Bennet.
