Abydos is a fictional planet in the movie Stargate and the TV series Stargate SG-1. In the series, Abydos is designated P8X-873. In the film, Abydos is said to be on the other side of the known universe in the Kaliem galaxy; in the series, it is located in the Milky Way and is the closest habitable planet within the stargate network. This proximity is what allows the gate to make the connection from Earth to Abydos, as stellar drift had not yet made the address invalid.

History
Ten thousand years ago, the alien Ra came to Earth and discovered humans in ancient Egypt. He took on the persona of the Egyptian god Ra and, using the Stargate, he transported humans to Abydos to become slaves, mining naquadah. Ra built pyramids on Earth and a great pyramid on Abydos. After 5,000 years, the humans on Earth rebelled against Ra and buried the Stargate. Ra never returned to Earth. To prevent the same events ocurring on Abydos, Ra outlawed writing.
Five thousand years later, the Stargate on Earth was rediscovered and a connection was made with Abydos. A team was sent to investigate and ensure there were no threats to Earth. Once through the gate, the team from Earth discovered a desert planet occupied by humans with similarities to ancient Egyptians. The team first encounters Kasuf, the chief of the nearby village, and he introduces them to his people, who prove to be friendly and welcoming. Dr. Daniel Jackson, the archeologist who solved the mystery of the Stargate, and the team leader, Colonel Jack O'Neill, became friends with Kasuf's children, Sha're and Skaara. Sha're, given to Daniel as his wife, helped him discover the necessary symbols inside the pyramid that emable the team to return home. The two fell in love. The team also helped the Abydonians rebel against Ra, whom they believed to be their god. Ra was killed with a nuclear weapon, which was detonated on his ship.
At the end of the movie, Daniel Jackson decided to remain on Abydos while the rest of the team returned to Earth. He promised to bury the gate, and the Airforce was led to believe that he died and the Stargate on Abydos was destroyed. Daniel spent a year on Abydos and learned the language of the Abydonians. He also married Sha're and deciphered the writing on the walls inside the pyramid.
Stargate SG-1
In the premiere episode of the series, "Children of the Gods," Apophis and his Jaffa come through Earth's Stargate and attack the SGC. The SGC is reopened to discover the source of the new threat. Jack O'Neill is forced to admit he did not destroy the Abydos gate and returns to lead another team through to Abydos. On Abydos, he reunites with Daniel Jackson, who informs them that the Stargate did not connect only to Abydos as they had first thought. Daniel discovered a wall covered in gate addresses and realized the Stargate was a part of a larger network that led to many planets throughout the galaxy. With Daniel's help, Samantha Carter, an astrophysicist and Air Force officer, realizes that the address permutations previously tried failed because the gate did not compensate for stellar drift, as it had been disconnected from the network for several thousand years.
The cartouche wall of addresses on Abydos was the full listing of planets visited and occupied by the Goa'uld. It was believed to be the full listing of the Stargate network until the Season 2 episode "The Fifth Race", when O'Neill, under the influence of Ancient knowledge, added many new addresses, including one to the Asgard homeworld in the galaxy Ida.
In "Children of the Gods," Skaara and Sha're are forcibly taken from Abydos by Apophis and become hosts to the Goa'uld symbiotes Klorel and Amonet. O’Neill and his team are also taken prisoner, and their execution is ordered. With the help of the Jaffa Teal'c, they manage to escape but are unable to rescue Skaara and Sha're. Daniel is determined to find his wife, who has become the queen of the System Lord Apophis. He joins O'Neill's team to fulfill this goal. Unfortunately, after years of searching, Daniel loses his wife when the Goa'uld inside her tries to kill him, and she is in turn killed by Teal'c. His brother-in-law Skaara is eventually freed of the Goa'uld Klor'el and returns to Abydos.
In the epsiode "Full Circle," an Ascended Daniel leads the team back to Abydos in search of the Eye of Ra, a stone also sought by Anubis, who intends to use it to power a deadly weapon. Anubis is given the weapon when he promises to leave Abydos alone. Anubis goes back on his promise, and Daniel is unable to stop him. Anubis destroys the Abydos gate, and the surrounding pyramid and village. Fortunately, Oma Desala helped most, if not all, of the population of Abydos ascend to a higher plane of existence.
