A Scanner Darkly is a 1977 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. The novel is set in 1994 Orange County, California. In 2006, the novel was brought to the screen in A Scanner Darkly. The novel deals with issues of drug use and pervasive surveillance and features protagonist, Bob Arctor, one of a group of drug users. Bob also has a parallel life as undercover agent, Fred, sent to spy on Arctor's household. Though Arctor intended to only pose as a drug user, he becomes addicted to a powerful drug known as substance D. The psychoactive drug causes the two hemispheres of the brain to act independently causing Fred not to realize he is actually Arctor and he begins spying on himself.
