A Deepness in the Sky is a 1999 novel by Vernor Vinge. The novel won the 2000 Hugo Award for Best Novel. The story is set thirty thousand years prior to the events of A Fire Upon the Deep and focuses on two groups of humans, the Qeng Ho, a culture of free traders, and the Emergents, a ruthless society based on the technological enslavement of minds. Both groups await the awakening of an alien race of spider-like creatures, the Arachna. The Qeng Ho seek to open trade with them but the Emergents have other darker plans. While they wait for the Arachna to develop technology they can exploit, the two groups suffer tyranny, rebellion and repression.
