ATA gene

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

The Ancient Technology Activation gene, or "ATA gene," is an important factor in the sci-fi shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The ATA gene is a specific gene present in the Ancient species that is part of the Ancient's genetic code, making their technology usable only by those who possess the gene. It is similar to a lock and key to their technology, the lock being bulit into the technology and the key being the gene.

According to Dr. Carson Beckett, who discovered the existence of this gene, the ATA gene is always active, instructing various cells in the body to produce a series of proteins and enzymes that interact with the skin, the nervous system, and the brain, thus enabling the gene carriers to operate Ancient technology. Because of interbreeding between Alterans and humans, a small percentage of humans from Earth have this gene, as well as an infinitesimal percentage of those in the Pegasus Galaxy.
