20 Million Miles to Earth is a 1957 monster movie directed by Nathan Juran and written by Bob Williams and Christopher Knopf with special effects by acclaimed stop-motion animator, Ray Harryhausen. Produced by Charles H. Schneer with Morningside Productions was released in 1957, and stars William Hopper and Joan Taylor. Initially filmed in black and white, a colorized version of the film was released for its fiftieth anniversary, July 31, 2007.

Synopsis

An American spaceship returns from Venus and crash lands in the ocean off the Italian coast. The ship's crew is rescued by Sicilian fishermen and taken to a hotel. The crew's doctor dies and leaves his notebook behind. Crewman Colonel Robert Calder (William Hopper) goes on a search for a lost specimen from Venus. The specimen is discovered by a young boy who sells it to him. The egg hatches into a reptilian creature and grows rapidly, escaping its cage. The creature proves to be a vegetarian, attacking only when provoked. It eventually makes its way to Rome, now the size of two-story building. The military attempts to stop the creature which is misinterpreted as being violent and dangerous.
