2012: The War for Souls is a 2007 novel Whitley Streiber. The novel centers on the Mayan prediction of an unspecified event occurring on December 21, 2012, the end of the Mayan calendar, that will forever change the world. The date coincides with that of Earth's alignment with the galactic core. The last time this occurred, 26,000 years ago, when Cro-Magnon man had an inexplicable burst in creativity and began creating cave paintings. Steiber's novel focuses on an alien presence on earth that, on the specified date, emerges from sacred sites from around the world and begins ripping souls from human bodies. The world plunges into chaos and a war to save humanity ensues. Amidst the chaos heroes are made and villains show themselves and transform the reality of life on Earth into something altogether different.
